SOUTH AFRICA: LAST WALLS OF NDEBELE

Director(s): Frederic TONOLLI, Catherine MONFAJON – Writer(s): Frédéric TONOLLI   Contact Contact   Download Print page

The superb and inventive art of mural painting of the Ndebele people is slowly disappearing in a turbulent South Africa. Some women, however, wearing unique copper necklaces around their necks, refuse to give up their traditions. Since the white farmers seized their lands, it’s been a matter of pride for the Ndebele to paint their houses in an expression of their identity. Nowadays, the Ndebele spend most of their time riding on the bus that takes them to work in Pretoria and there’s little time left for painting walls. Modern life is just as much an enemy of tradition as was Apartheid.
