SIERRA LEONE: DYING IN SILENCE, FAMINE IN SIERRA LEONE

Director(s): Gonzalo ARIJON, Helene RISACHER   Contact Contact   Download Print page

He is four years old but looks about three. He barely speaks. Eating is the most important part of his life. He concentrates hard in front of his spoon. He is called "Survivor" because he struggled to get to one of the refugee camps in Sierra Leone with medical aid and food distribution centres. This little orphan has become the Centre's mascot. Sierra Leone seems like paradise, with its white beaches, fertile earth and deposits of gold, diamonds and other minerals. But the country has been embroiled in a civil war for years. The principal victim is the population. Villages are deserted, burned and pillaged. Sierra Leone could be the richest country in West Africa, but today it is the fourth poorest in the world.
