SERBIA: WHAT FUTURE FOR THE YOUNG ?

Director(s): Laurence JOURDAN – Writer(s): Laurence JOURDAN   Contact Contact   Download Print page

The bombs started falling in March ’99. For the third time in ten years, Milosovic had dragged his country and its young people into a war. A generation that is today politically divided, many of them have been in opposition to the regime for years and suffer from the consequences: more than a hundred students have been arrested since September ’99. Some still believe in change for the better, others are resigned to survive in an agonising Serbia. And then there are those who see their future elsewhere. An estimated 400 000 are said to have left the country in the last ten years. A whole generation is trapped by the consequences of a murderous ideology - ethnic cleansing, repression, unemployment, international isolation – a whole generation is gripped by fear of “no future” and few have faith in the current democratic opposition.
