Early January 1994 saw the uprising of the Zapatist National Liberation Army (EZLN) guerrillas against the Mexican government. The rebels were Indian peasants, who drew their inspiration from Emiliano Zapata, the hero of the 1910 Mexican Revolution. Their leader, Subcommandante Marcos, had secretly been planning the Indian uprising for ten years. The ensuing battle claimed many lives until the outgoing president Salinas declared a ceasefire, which was denounced by Marcos after the election of the new president. Using exceptional footage of movement leader Marcos, this film aims to present the rebellion and explore the centuries-old grievances that triggered it.
