The opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics: four lone figures under the Olympic flag, four athletes without an internationally recognized nation, admitted into the Olympic family. Four athletes who live their moment of glory.. for three seconds on television. They truly honour the spirit of the games, even if they left them very quickly through the stage door. One of them is Victor Ramos, a boxer, selected by the skin of his teeth… pressure from Australia, Portugal and Kofi Annan did help. Obviously, he did not come prepared, there is no opportunity on his ravaged island. He did not even have his own boxing gloves but had to borrow a pair from the army. Back in Timor, his family watches and follows every step of his Olympic dream… once they managed to borrow a tv set from UN officials, that is.
