Iceland experiences a volcanic eruption every 5 years on average due to its geographic situation. Located right on the volcanic mid-Atlantic mountain range that separates North America and Greenland from Europe, the island separates in two at the rate of 2 cm per year. A thousand years ago, the Vikings, reputed to be the world’s best sailors, landed with their ‘drakkars’ to settle. In time they turned their back to the sea and took to sheep farming in the mountains. Each September, in an age-old tradition, their descendants still go in search of their sheep in an area covering 700 km2 of mountainous territory
