On the one hand, Romain and his friends, the new militant (“zadiste”) occupants, and historical farmers like Sylvie and Marcel, who had refused to leave their lands. They work on a collective project in alternative agriculture. On the other hand, Mickael Mary and farmers on the edge of the “Zad”, the occupied zone. They are supported by the Chamber of Agriculture and represent traditional farming. They had agreed to withdraw from the area in return for compensation received. Today, they claim their share of the lands that are once again available.
At the centre, the state…using a carrot-and-stick strategy to bring the “zadistes” to heel, preventing them from turning their project into a permanent settlement...
