For nearly a million years people roamed the untamed lands between Europe and what is known today as the United Kingdom. But at the end of the last Ice Age, 12,000 years ago, massive sea-rise flooded the plains north of the European continent and separated the British Isles from the rest of Europe.

At the time 'Britain' was just a geographical entity with no political meaning and no single cultural identity. Flying over the landscape of the British Isles today, we can still make out many traces of early settlements: remains of prehistoric villages, stone circles and mysterious drawings etched in chalk... or the imposing Roman fortifications with the most beautiful example being The Hadrian’s Wall.
From the Stone Age to the fall of the Roman Empire, human presence has left its imprint on the landscapes of the British Isles.
