MEETING PORTUGAL
Director(s): Nicolas FRANK – Writer(s): Maja NESCOVIC Contact Print page
Portugal, historically a land of emigration, is now a new destination for immigrants. Not only from the former colonies, but nowadays also from the Ukraine and Moldavia. Those who wish to settle here first pass through the Foreigners' Welcome Centre. Maja notices that it’s rather a warm welcome, because Portugal considers that immigration is a real chance for the country.
When meeting the elderly and a leader from the extreme-left, Maja understands why the Portuguese have a very negative perception of retirement… no doubt the fact that their pension is among the weakest in Europe accounts for it.
At the port of Sesimbra, Maja wants to find out if Portuguese fishermen have a more enviable situation than their European counterparts and if cod is still one of the favorite dishes of the region.
Fado, Foot and the Fatima sanctuary…are “the three Fs” still characteristic of the Portuguese identity? These are some of the stories Maja discovers in this European stopover in Portugal.
