In an effort to open “public service” to the market, the EU decreed that electricity was a “product like any other”. But, are we able to apprehend the consequences of such a liberalisation?

In the 1990’s, California broke up its own public service into many private companies and… became the victim of its own idea: in 2001, these companies plunged the whole state into darkness. Electricity prices rose by 40%.
Neither this example, nor the series of black-outs around the world in 2003 were able to stop the European deregulation machine.
Will electricity become the luxury product of the future?
