It is the day after the end of the war. 9 million Japanese are homeless. 3 million have been killed in the war and 1.3 million of these were civilians who died in the massive American bombing campaign of which the atomic bombing was only a part.
More than 6.5 million Japanese, half of them civilians, were detained in the former occupied territories. Most of the soldiers who fought in Malaysia and Burma would not return before the end of 1947. Post-war returns would continue until 1955-57
The film recalls the war years through a series of flashbacks that are introduced through particular events on the day of the actual surrender ceremony of Japan that took place on September 2, 1945 in the Bay of Tokyo, on board the USS Missouri…
