SPORT TO THE DEATH
Director(s): Albert KNECHTEL – Writer(s): Albert KNECHTEL, Pierre CAULE Contact Print page
Sport has lost much of its good reputation following reports of a number of premature – and often unexplained – deaths of top level athletes, their catastrophic physical condition and their life expectancy which is below average. These are the issues under scrutiny by Albert Knechtel and Pierre Caule, who are both familiar with the sports environment.
A considerable number of retired athletes are dependant on alcohol or drugs. Is it possible that these athletes have been doped during their career to a degree that they needed to find a substitute after they quit competition? Or has the end of their active career had such a destabilising effect on the athletes that they have turned to drugs or alcohol to avoid depression?
Beyond the question of doping, however, our documentary looks at the biotechnology defining new horizons in sport : the athletes body itself could be modified. A number of athletes bear witness: German Olympic champion Frank Busemann, French soccer player Emmanuel Petit, or the great Edwin Moses.
