“Perela” is a man of smoke, praised to the heavens, then held in contempt by the city to which he arrived one fine day, coming down a chimney. King and queen, socialites, archbishop, banker, philosopher and ordinary people – all of society admired him and entrusted him the responsibility of writing the Code. Then, however, following a trial, the same society sentenced him to life imprisonment…

“Perela” is the subject of the last Pascal Dusapin’s new opera, premièred at the Bastille Opera (Paris) in February 2003. A composer at the height of his artistic powers, passionately eclectic, a lover of literature and photography…Pascal Dusapin is the kind of artists who knows how to bring contemporary music within reach of non-specialized audiences.

The opera – which is more biographical than autobiographical – is full of memories that serve as key, links to the reality that reminds us that all artistic endeavor has its roots there. From the work itself to the composer, from past to present, from the music to the libretto, from image to words, this documentary weaves a thread of interlinking traces and resonances..
