SETIF, ONE 8TH OF MAY 1945 (V.E. Day Massacre)

Director(s): Medhi LALLAOUI, Bernard LANGLOIS – Writer(s): Medhi LALLAOUI, Bernard LANGLOIS   Contact Contact   Download Print page

The events of that 8th May in Sétif and its neighbourhood have never been told. The story is of a massacre of civilians the very day that the victory over fascism was being celebrated. Was it a revolt organised by the nationalists or a peaceful demonstration which degenerated? This film uses archive footage, eyewitness accounts and previously unavailable enquiry reports to describe the horror that this date evokes for generations of Algerian nationalist militants. Those very same who took up arms 10 years later knowing that fascism and intolerance also consist of wiping tragic and ignominious events from our collective memory.
