This is a story of an absent father, devoured by his passion for hunting… a mysterious, invisible bird. It is a tale spun by eyewitnesses who are, if truth be told, sometimes a little weird, often even a little mad. A story that has the slightly bitter taste of missed opportunities. The setting is the Gascogne, a very colourful and picturesque – but very conservative – region in the south west of France. These are the ingredients of a deeply personal story of Jean-Marie Barrère.
While everybody is on the trail of the elusive woodcock, Jean-Marie is on the trail of his father. Equally elusive in his lifetime, he tended to forget everything and everybody over his hunting passion - a passion which he did not even pass on to his son. Beyond tracking the woodcock, this is an attempt to recapture a childhood that had been overshadowed by the encounter with sweet madness…
