Behind the ramparts, tucked away in the pearl fishermen's memory, the town of Essaouira contains a secret, the history of purple. This divine colour was extracted from shells and exported as far as Ancient Rome to adorn the Emperor's robes. Although coloured by its legend, Essaouira has since lost the secret of the making of purple.
