Well-known for its kangaroos and koalas, Australia can also lay claim to the world's largest number of... wild camels. Imported in the nineteenth century by the outback pioneers, the camels were gradually released into the wild as the motor vehicle took over. There are nearly 200 000 of them today in the Australian deserts. Stockmen capture them to be tamed or for food. A whole camel industry is developing. Australia even exports its camels to Saudi Arabia.
