After Charlemagne’s realm had been split up, the West knew a long period of political instability, invasion and famine, whereas the Arab culture flourished.
In the 12th century, things changed. The European continent experienced a time of renewed faith and “conquering Christianity”, at the expense of Islam. In 1212 the kings of Navarra, Castille and Aragon began to re-possess Spain, hitherto occupied by the Arabs.
It marks the beginning of two centuries of Crusades…
