USA: PRISONER AND HIS HORSE (The)
Director(s): Jean-Christophe KLOTZ Contact Print page
Our story begins in the desert mountains of the American West, in mustang territory. 35 volunteers from Canyon City Penitentiary in Colorado are participating in a particularly original rehabilitation programme. Under the supervision of three instructors, the inmates learn how to train wild horses which will be sold on the open market. The challenge for the authorities is twofold: first to propose an original method of rehabilitation for prisoners, but also to find a solution to the problem of overpopulation of the wild horses in the American West. As their number has increased considerably, these wild horses are now causing damage to farmers and the environment.
Faced with another form of overcrowding - that of prisons - state authorities are now particularly satisfied with the programme’s success as it has greatly reduced the number of violent incidents between prison guards and inmates.
