Director(s): Inara KOLMANE – Writer(s): Inara KOLMANE   Contact Contact   Download Print page

Play
The young Soviet Union ushered in an era of sexual freedom: out with bourgeois conventions! But in the ensuing social chaos, the regime soon operated a U-turn, exalting the virtues of toiling for the glory of communism. Sexual activity had been relegated to its strict reproductive function. 70 years of communist rule through the prism of sexuality!

THE PRESS:
“From the excesses of the October revolution to the fall of the USSR in 1991 – not to forget the leaden weight of silence throughout the Stalinist period - the documentary offers a whirlwind of fascinating stories and archives, a rich chronological succession of sometimes dramatic anecdotes or titillating titbits, which throw new light on the intimate life beyond the iron curtain.” - Juliette Galeazzi – « Ma Culture » / RTS (18 Jan. 2018)

“In this amazing documentary, Inara Kolmane, tells the history of the USSR from the angle of sexuality. From Riga to Kiev through St. Petersburg, Moscow and Siberia, she talks to eye witnesses, historians, filmmakers, researchers ...” Alain Constant, Le Monde , 29 Nov. 2017

“This documentary film revisits the history of the Eastern Bloc through the prism of the official taboo weighing on sexuality…and not from the usual political, geopolitical or economic angle ...” Xavier Thomann, Télérama 22 Nov. 2017

"...dizzying and unprecedented insight into the intimacy of a people who lived a secret but very eventful double life during the seventy years of the communist regime." RTBF, 27 Nov. 2017

“Inara Kolmane, a Latvian filmmaker born in the USSR, looks with humour and irony at the unprecedented history of the USSR’s sexuality. Immerse yourself in the intimacy of a people who lived a secret double life during the 70 years of the communist regime.” Télé Loisir 15 Nov. 2017
