Point du Jour International | CARIBBEAN RING OF FIRE (The), Antoine DE MAXIMY

Scientific expedition on board the "Ocean Voyager" to explore the famous "Ring of Fire", a series of volcanos in the Lesser Antilles. A region still traumatised by the memory of one 8th May 1902 when Mount Pélé literally exploded, devastating busy harbour town St. Pierre in seconds and killing 28.000 people in a "nuée ardente", a phenomenon little known at the time. Since Summer 1997, the Soufrière on the island of Montserrat has once more been active. Does it present a real danger ? The scientists at the Institute of Global Physics in Paris aim at evaluating the risks on land and under the sea on board a 150 foot floating laboratory equipped with two submarines capable of diving to depths of 1000 metres.
