Forests have never had such good press! Forests are presented everywhere as the solution to the ecological crisis, from climate change to the collapse of biodiversity.
The current race to decrease the build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has led to a boom in investment in tree plantations, encouraged by many international institutions such as the UN and the IPCC. Indeed, many scientific studies have established the role of trees in carbon absorption, to the point that the carbon offset market has opened up to the exchange of emission rights against shares in the investment of tree plantation projects. Many campaigns led by multinationals thus offer everyone the opportunity to "plant a tree to save the planet".
International reforestation programmes are multiplying, but what kind of forest are we talking about? A primary forest has nothing to do with a eucalyptus monoculture. Nevertheless, both are considered “forests” according to the criteria of international institutions and eco-labels. However, these monoculture plantations are not without destructive effects on existing ecosystems ...
This filmed investigation, carried out on five continents and on the very sites of these major reforestation projects, will focus on precisely assessing the real ecological impact of these plantations…
