From the first Arab invasions in the eighth century, the fight against the Moors has been assimilated to a Christian crusade and mobilized all of Europe. For nearly eight centuries, the struggle for the Reconquista, the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Christian kingdoms in the Middle Ages, would leave its mark on the landscape of Spain, with imposing castles and fortified towns built from Castile-Leon to Granada, which would be conquered in 1492.
