Wednesday, 7 January 2015, 11.30 am: Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, two Islamist extremist terrorists, killed eleven people at the offices of French satirical weekly magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo’. Among the victims were cartoonists Cabu, Wolinski, Tignous, Honoré, Charb and the economist Bernard Maris. Outside the satirical paper’s offices, the Kouachi brothers claimed responsibility shouting "Allah Akbar, we have avenged the Prophet!".
It all began ten years earlier with the publication of edition Nr. 712 of Charlie Hebdo. Under the front page title “Muhammad overwhelmed by fundamentalists", the Prophet’s caricature signed by Cabu, sighed “It’s Hard Being Loved by Jerks!".
In February 2006, we had been filming the preparation of this special edition which has, sadly, become history. These hitherto unpublished archives provide the backbone of this film, as we witness how Cabu, Wolinski, Cavanna and the entire editorial team uphold the right to freedom of expression and the right to caricature.
With the power of their pen and their sense of humour, they’ve been defending our freedom of thought for the past five decades and it seems vital today to remember. Because we need to defend these rights more than ever.
