Serge Brunier takes us on a journey through matter, space and time. Between France and Switzerland, 100 meters below the surface, he explores a mysterious tunnel that houses the LHC (The Large Hadron Collider), the only machine in the world able to travel back far enough in time to approach the Big Bang and study the origins of the cosmos.

This gigantic scientific instrument controlled by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is not a telescope – it studies particle collisions. Researchers from all over the world are trying to meet one of the biggest challenges in physics: to understand the state of matter when the whole universe was concentrated in a tiny space, some 13.8 billion years ago.
