S2 - 02. CHILE, AT THE HEART OF THE MILKY WAY
Director(s): Jean-Philippe URBACH – Writer(s): Serge BRUNIER, Bruno BUCHER Contact Print page
To the backdrop of the dark sky of the Chilean Andes cordillera, the Milky Way reveals itself in all its glory to the naked eye. Strangely enough, we will never be able to contemplate our galaxy as you look at a distant star. We are simply too close, our solar system is lodged in one of the huge spiral arms of the Milky Way.
To unravel its secrets, discover the diversity of the stars that compose it and understand its turbulent history, astronomers use powerful telescopes to navigate in this immense stellar disk of a diameter of some 100,000 light years that rotates at a mind-blowing speed of 250 km per second!
