Cosmology, the science that explores the origins and the eventual fate of the universe, was born in Los Angeles at the beginning of the 20th century. In earlier times, the cosmos was limited to the Milky Way and a few million stars.
In the 1920s, Edwin Hubble, would dramatically open our cosmic horizon upon discovering a multitude of other "Milky Ways" in the universe… the galaxies. And then he discovered that these galaxies seem to move away from us. In just a few decades, these observations revealed a new architecture of the universe and pushed its boundaries in a way we could never have imagined before – thus laying the foundation for the Big Bang theory.
Nearly a century after Hubble, Serge Brunier takes us to examine the original photographic plates on which appeare in black and white the image of these new worlds - the starting point of the great astronomical adventure. By opening for us the doors of the mythical observatories of Mount Wilson and Mount Palomar, Serge Brunier takes us way back in time… and to the dramatic question: what was there before the Big Bang?
