S1 - 01. CANARY ISLANDS, SUN UNDER SURVEILLANCE
Director(s): Bruno BUCHER – Writer(s): Serge BRUNIER, Bruno BUCHER Contact Print page
In this breathtaking landscape, we discover why the Canaries are not only a paradise for astronomers, but also to geologists and botanists. Its geographical situation and the island’s topography made it a haven for many plant species found only in this archipelago.
It’s an arduous climb, but worth the effort when reaching the top of the mountain where a range of telescopes scan the sky and especially our star, the sun. This ball of gas of 1.4 million kilometers in diameter and 5500°C is in perpetual activity. By observing the impressive eruptions of the sun that project into space electrically charged particles, the researchers hope to be able to prevent them to threaten our planet.
