DRESS IN ISRAEL

Jewish orthodox dress is full of religious symbolism and it is all the more disconnected from the reality of the Hebrew state as it is worn by the true anti Zionists. We discover a country where women who are religious have to juggle with any number of complex, religious precepts, regardless of whether they are Jewish or Muslim.

Under the omnipresent khaki uniforms, you’ll find t-shirts that proclaim that Tsahal is not an army of aggression. And there is another uniform that belongs to the creation of the state: the minimalist dress of the Kibutzniks, egalitarian pioneers who believe in sharing and simplicity.
It comes as a surprise to realize that hippie dress imported from India is much more common in Israel than anywhere else. And that young Jewish couples, just like many other Israelis, have adopted Arab rituals to celebrate their engagement.
But the most colourfully dressed Israelis – in a mix of military, religious, hippie or pioneer style – are the settlers in the occupied territories.
