The « fanatics » are always « them », the others. And « the other » is always seen as a threat in our society – especially if the other is a Muslim. The fundamentalist temptation, however, is a tendancy that can today be observed in all monotheistic religions.
Who are these new believers who made God the centre of their existence, after having “tried to manage on their own”? Are they all the same? Are they different from each other? Is the “born again” phenomena a breeding ground for intolerance or fanaticism as many believe? Or, to the contrary, is this “neo-fundamentalism” more in tune with the concerns of our world today.
The film does not “judge”, but investigates on the ground, in the eastern part of France, meeting born again Muslims, Jews, Evangelists and “charismatic Christians”. Whether they are French-born or immigrants, they all speak of the profound change they underwent and of the void they felt before in their life…
This investigation explores the links between the rise of religious fanaticism and the “rebirth” of the phenomenon of religion. What is the price of this revival taking place in all religions? Does it disturb the relationship with the secular world and with history?
