True enough, there are huge waves in Hawai. But the same can be said about Australia, California, Argentina, Mexico or many other places. So why is that surf found its origins off the coast of Honolulu? It goes back to the Polynesians of Maui who practised an initiation rite on the towering waves of the equinox. Those who successfully passed the test were the kings of the dsicipline. Non-Polynesians attended the ceremony and, ever since, Hawai has become the home of surf.
