HONORE FRAGONARD, REVOLUTIONARY ANATOMY

Play
He was one of the most fascinating characters of the Age of Enlightenment: French anatomist and surgical genius Honoré Fragonard (1732 - 1799), cousin of the famous painter.

In a day and age where anatomical science was still in its infancy, he invented his own technique to preserve corpses - anatomical preparations called «écorchés», which he then staged and exhibited with genuine artistic intent.

These strange figures with their grimacing faces are at first sight quite frightening. They are all that remains of his work today. Whether one admires or rejects Fragonard’s approach, he provokes a lasting fascination.
