HONDURAS : INDIANS UNDER THE SEA

Director(s): Thierry DEROUET, Yves VICENT   Contact Contact   Download Print page

Each year, 4000 Misquito Indians leave their villages deep in the heart of the Honduran forest and reach the coast where they are immediately employed as divers. In the last twenty years, Honduran captains have begun to adapt their vessels with basic diving equipment, exploited the Indians and gradually transformed the traditional fishing season into a lucrative export trade. The Indians dive all day long with barely any heed paid to safety regulations or to the basic laws of physics: accidents and injuries are a daily occurrence. To ward off the evil spirits of the sea, by which many believe they are cursed, and to blunt the pain which racks their bodies, the Misquitos consume huge quantities of alcohol, marijuana and cocaïne. Exploited and discarded by civilisation, their addiction compels them to remain its victim.
