Brexit. The biggest divorce of all time. A test for the European Union, a challenge for its future. A situation with no precedents, borne out of a succession of risky gambles starting with David Cameron’s fated referendum.
Michel Barnier, the EU chief Brexit negotiator, will defend European interests. Thanks to our exclusive access, the film takes us to Poland, Denmark, Greece, Scotland, Ireland, Bulgaria or Switzerland, and right into the heart of these negotiations. The stakes are huge; the entanglements almost impossible to unravel within a limited time period of two years.
Like in any divorce, the past needs to be sorted out: The status of EU citizens living in the UK, and vice versa; the financial settlement of the UK's obligations under EU membership rules (the so-called divorce bill) and the issue of the border between the two Irelands.
Torn between the Hard Brexiteers pushing to leave the single market, and the advocates of a soft Brexit, wishing to preserve free access to the EU economies, Theresa May is unable to clarify her position. Michel Barnier keeps reminding her that "The clock is ticking".
Faced with such uncertainty, speculation is rife on both sides of the Channel as to which scenario will prevail. Come what may, on March 29, 2019, the die will have been cast and the United Kingdom will leave the European Union. But under which terms? And nobody knows where a NO DEAL scenario would lead…
